NSW Police have shot a man who ran at them with a knife outside a train station in Sydney’s south west.

The ABC understands officers were chasing a man down a Campbelltown street when he pulled out a large knife and confronted them.

The man is believed to have been shot in the stomach before he was taken in an ambulance to Liverpool Hospital for medical treatment.

His condition is unknown.

The ABC understands police deployed a taser before shooting the man.

The shooting happened in broad daylight next to the busy train station as students from a nearby high school headed home.

A street next to the station was taped off by police and medical equipment was seen lying in the middle of the road.

NSW Police have launched a critical incident investigation, which will probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
