Newport County vs Manchester City: Michael Flynn tells talkSPORT he’s dreaming of FA Cup giant killing

Newport County manager Michael Flynn is dreaming of guiding his side to the biggest giant killing in recent FA Cup history when the Welsh club host Manchester City this weekend.

The 15th placed team in League Two take on the defending Premier League champions on Saturday in a true David versus Goliath cup tie – LIVE on talkSPORT!

Few are giving the Exiles much hope, especially with Man City in such ruthless form of late. Having thumped League One Burton Albion 9-0 in the Carabao Cup, many are expecting another mauling.

But Newport are on a run of their own, with two shock victories over Leicester City in the third round and then Middlesbrough via a replay in the fourth.

They also gained a number of neutral fans when they held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw in the fourth round last season, forcing a memorable replay trip to Wembley which ended in a 2-0 defeat to Spurs.

City are the next team to come to town and, while few will give the Exiles a chance, boss Flynn is confident his side will not lie down against Pep Guardiola’s superstars.

“It’s going to be difficult, I’m under no illusions whatsoever about how difficult it’s going to be,” he said on Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“They’re arguably the best team in Europe and I think they’ve got the best manager in the world at the moment in Pep Guardiola.

“It really is David versus Goliath.

“You look at the finance difference between the clubs, the facilities and everything… but you never know. It’s the FA Cup and stranger things have happened.

Man City have won their two FA Cup games this season by an aggregate score of 12-0.

“I hope they bring a strong team. I want to pit ourselves against the best Man City. I want to see how we do against Pep Guardiola in a tactical battle and how we can manage them.

“Let’s show what we’re about and let’s have a go at them. We’ll be having a go at them, the pitch will be a little bit different to what they’re used to.

“I just hope a few of them have an off day and all my players play to the best of their ability, because if that happens at Rodney Parade we’ve got a chance.

“They’re littered with so much quality, but it’s a chance for our players to stand up and be counted.

“I know you’re probably thinking, ‘Has he lost the plot here? Is he actually thinking they can do something?’ But If I don’t think that then how are my players going to believe that?

“I’ve got to lead them the right way and give them the belief that if they can play the game of their lives they can stop the likes of Aguero and De Bruyne.

“Let’s not forget a lot of them marked Harry Kane out of the game for long periods, the players have that ability when they’re on their game.”
