A catastrophic fire has ripped through the iconic Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, causing the spire and the roof to collapse in scenes that have shocked onlookers.

Officials say they think the cathedral’s iconic twin towers have been saved, but firefighters were not able to save the 90-metre spire, which was seen engulfed in flames before toppling over.

There are also concerns about the building’s priceless collection of art and cultural artefacts, including a crown of thorns believed by Catholics to have been worn by Jesus during the crucifixion.

A firefighter had been seriously injured in the blaze, while two-thirds of Notre Dame’s roofing “has been ravaged”, fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet said.

Notre Dame was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages.

Huge crowds have gathered at all vantage points to watch the fire, with many onlookers said to be shocked and in disbelief.
